The latest twist in the ill will and violence around Rangers and Celtic soccer rivalry in Glasgow has been ‘suspect packages’ in the post.
Strathclyde Police are appealing for three potential witnesses to come forward and help with their ongoing enquiries into suspect packages sent to high profile individuals in recent weeks.

A couple, thought to be in their late teens, and another man were seen separately walking near the post box on Montgomerie Terrace, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, around 2pm on Friday 15 April 2011. The post box is a focal part of the ongoing investigation into suspect packages sent to high profile individuals in recent weeks.

* The man is described as being in his 30’s, wearing glasses and a baseball cap and was walking a black and brown Staffordshire Terrier type dog.
* The young couple are described as a man who wearing a black hooded top and the woman is small and slim. They were walking with a dark coloured Staffordshire Terrier type puppy, thought to be around eight weeks old.

Detective Chief Superintendent John Mitchell said:

"As part of our ongoing investigation we have been conducting house-to-house enquiries in Montgomerie Terrace in Kilwinning and as a result, we have identified three people that we would like to speak to as potential witnesses.

โWe are aware that they were seen in the area around 2pm on Friday 15 April. One is described as a man wearing baseball cap and glasses, walking a black and brown Staffordshire Terrier type dog. The other two are a young couple who were also walking a Terrier type puppy which has been described to us as being around eight weeks old.

โWe would like these potential witnesses to come forward as they could have vital information which might help our investigation. Anything they may have seen or heard on the street at that time could provide us with clues which could lead us to the person or people responsible for these crimes.

โWe can’t stress enough that any information is of interest to us, something that may seem insignificant could actually be the piece of information we need. If you know something, get in touch. You can either contact your local police office, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

โThe person or persons who are responsible for this have not just caused massive distress and worry to the intended targets, they have also placed the people who handle the mail in harms way. They must be caught and they must be brought to justice.โ
Appropriate Advice

Chief Superintendent Ruaraidh Nicolson said:

"I would like to make it absolutely clear that the people who have received these packages appear to have been targeted for comments they have made in recent weeks. We do not believe that this is a general threat to all Celtic supporters or other high profile supporters of the club.

โWe are giving appropriate advice to people who we believe should be getting it. It is really unhelpful to have lots of media and public speculation as to who has been receiving this guidance. It only serves to create further fear and alarm in our communities.

โI would ask, of course, that the public do remain be vigilant. If you get something through the post that you weren’t expecting, or have any doubts about a package that you receive, contact the police.โ
