Designing and Managing Better Security into the Next Generation of Retail Destinations is the title of a March 17 morning seminar by the BCSC – British Council of Shopping Centres. It runs at No.4 Hamilton Place, London W1J 7BQ.
Emerging Local Development Frameworks may be expected to incorporate specific counter-terrorism provisions that will impact on the design of shopping centres and other retail destinations. A UK Government consultation document is shortly to be launched.
The City of London has recently adopted new design principles which are required to be incorporated into planning applicants’ Design and Access statements. Now other Local Authorities are considering their planning policies in view of their obligation ‘ …as part of their performance framework, to assess the measures they have taken to protect against terrorism’ (Gordon Brown).
The implications for new retail developments are set to be considerable.
BCSC has assembled speakers from the Home Office, RIBA, NaCTSO, City of London Corporation and DJ Goode Associates, to explore the issues and practical solutions at a seminar in central London, from 9.30m to 2pm.
