A recent Institute of Personnel and Development survey into absenses from the workplace due to sickness found the cost of sickness absenteeism is nearly œ500 per employee per year, or œ13 billion for the whole UK. One third of all sickness absnses, amounting to more than three days per employee per year, have nothing to do with ill health. Of the time off taken because of genuine sickness, the most common complaints were minor, such as a cold and headaches. For non-manual workers the second most cited reason was stress. IPD advisor in employment relations Diane Sinclair says: ?Organisations which have poor management, low morale and which put increasing pressure on staff will see their employees take more and more time off as sick leave.? IPD advises return to work interviews and proper record keeping to keep a lid on bogus sickie-pulling.
