Singapore Rail

by msecadm4921

Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) has a 750 fixed CCTV camera scheme installed, with IP-based digital transmission.

Systems integrator O’Connors Engineering has worked with Leeds-based video network installers COE. Some 51 stations, three depots and an operational control centre are covered, including in-cab monitors for train drivers to monitor trackside. The scheme enables diverse signal routing, automated video switching and network management, bandwidth on demand, dual redundancy and network-wide diagnostics. Products used are COE’s TCD II CCTV hardware controller, X-class MPEG-4 video system and SEE-net Graphical User Interface. The network is linked by a gigabit LAN primary ring, with a COE X-class LAN secondary back-up, with dual redundancy on all critical system elements, virtually eliminating any single points of failure, the installers report. Mark Marriage, COE’s Technical Director, said: "In addition to system integrity, this scheme will produce substantial savings on future maintenance costs. It marks the coming of age of digital technology in CCTV video networking and is something the industry has been working towards for some time." Utilising MPEG-4 compression, 4CIF, 25 frames per second image transmission is achieved over a digital network at bit rates from 1-4 Mb/s, providing picture quality normally associated with analogue-based systems. Operating over COE’s X-class digital transmission system, which has been specifically developed for transportation and high-end security applications, MPEG-4 digital codecs enable the system to be completely configurable remotely. Operational control can play back any recorded video from any station and relay the images immediately to operators in the field, using palm-top PCs.
