Tributes have been paid to Sir Stanley Bailey, who has died aged 81.
The tributes came from current and past police and the private security industry. He was praised as a great personality in the police family, and enthusiastic about ex-police associations such as Ex-Police in Commerce, of which he was a past president. He was for 17 years a member of the Professional Security Magazine editorial board. As Northumbria Chief Constable between 1975 and 1991 (succeeded by John, now Lord Stephens) he was one of the first senior police officers to initiate projects concerning the security industry. He was president of the Tyneside-based inspectorate, the Security Systems and Alarm Inspection Board (SSAIB) and a patron of the Association of Security Consultants (ASC). Mike Cahalane told Professional Security: โIn 1991 I was one of seven independent security consultants who founded the ASC. I was subsequently asked by the members to suggest a patron and asked Sir Stanley if he would be interested in lending his name and time. He accepted following a review of our activity and served as a patron of the ASC. He supported the aims and was always generous with his time and advice. I was delighted to continue my association with him as the representative of the ASC on the Board of the SSAIB. Knowing Sir Stanley over the last 36 years has been rewarding at all times. He was a consistent source of advice and encouragement to me personally and professionally. I will miss him.โ <br><br>Coalition founder<br><br>A career police officer – born in London, he was a wartime โBevan Boyโ in North East coal mines – he was the first Police Director of the Home Office Police Research and Development Unit. His honours included Commander of the British Empire; he was holder of the Queenโs Police Medal. It was in his time as chief constable that Northumbria Coalition Against Crime (NCAC, www.thecoalition.org.uk) was set up in 1990. In drawing on wider social groups to work on crime prevention, the coalition was in many ways ahead of its time – yet partnership work is taken for granted today by the police. NCAC is a registered charity which seeks to reduce crime and fear of crime and so improve quality of life. <br><br>The funeral service is on August 15 at Ponteland near Newcastle upon Tyne. The family invited contributions in Sir Stanleyโs name to The Stroke Association and Northumbria Police Benevolent Fund.
