Smartcard Use

by msecadm4921

Public and private sector organisations are recognising the benefits of installing access control systems using smartcard technology, it is claimed.

Smartcard firm G2 Integrated Solutions uses the technology to provide access control that challenge traditional security processes, according to the Newcastle-based firm.

G2’s access control solutions enable facilities managers to reduce the threat of terrorism, criminal damage and trespass while protecting employees and members of the public, it is claimed. Smartcards are used to restrict or enable the access of individuals or groups through buildings and sites at or between predetermined dates and times, the firm says.

Benefits include the ability to:

restrict unauthorised entry and enhance on-site security

monitor individual movements of employees and members of the public

provide computer-based central management and reporting

issue permanent, temporary, visitor and contractor passes

integrate with third party MIS, on-site parking systems and G2’s own ID card and cashless payment solutions.

The Myriad ESi networked access control product, operating over a LAN or WAN, can provide access control, ID card production, visitor management, alarm monitoring and a versatile reporting service, it is claimed. Its PC based software is available as a series of integrated modules, which can be combined to create a scalable system suitable for any size of organisation, according to the firm.

G2 adds that it has clients across the education, health, public sector, corporate and commercial markets, more than two million cardholders are using a G2 solution on 1,500 site installations nationwide. Clients include blue chip/FTSE 100 companies and household names such as HBoS, Unilever and Addenbrookes NHS Trust.

What they say

Sylvia Campbell, G2’s sales and marketing director, said: "Access control and restricting the movement of staff and public has become part of the business agenda for facilities managers, and the issue is an integral and continual part of their business planning. Many of our clients are also choosing smartcard applications to future-proof their system, knowing additional modules will allow the use of the same cards for other applications, such as ID, enrolment or cashless payment. Due to the benefits of such systems, we are confident that the uptake of these solutions will continue to grow in popularity and the use of smartcard technology will become more and more commonplace."
