Northumbria Police in Gateshead are encouraging smart phone users to employ modern technology to help them solve crime.
By adding smart phone applications that use built-in GPS tracking systems, owners can help officers reunite them with their phones should they be stolen.
Acting Inspector Colin Lowther of Gateshead Area Command said: "I’d urge all smart phone users to make the most of the technology available. Most smart phones have GPS tracking systems and there are applications available that can make the most of this.
"Officers can then work with victims to download hi-tech applications on to a PC or another mobile phone to track stolen items. It allows officers to follow a signal leading to specific addresses from where the stolen property can be recovered.
"Modern technology has its place alongside the more traditional police work and we’ll continue to combine all investigative techniques to keep crime down across the force.
"For those people who don’t have such phones I’d encourage them to ensure they register with the national property register, Immobilise at www.immobilise.com, which means if your phone or other property is stolen and later recovered, it’s returned to the rightful owner.
"People should also note down their IMEI number – International Mobile Equipment Identity – which can be used to stop the phone from being used and renders it useless to thieves."
The IMEI number can be retrieved by pressing *#06# or from your service provider.
Acting Inspector Lowther is also reminding people to look after their mobiles when they are out and about. He added: "By being aware of your surroundings and taking a few simple steps you can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of mobile phone theft.
"Keeping your mobile phone in a secure pocket or handbag will stop it being snatched from you. However, if you do need to use it make sure you have your wits about you."
