ABS brakes, four airbags and an immobiliser – Nottinghamshire police support officers are travelling A-class.

A donation by Mercedes-Benz of Nottingham has meant Police Community Support Officers in Rushcliffe South will have the opportunity to cover their area in style.

Mercedes-Benz have offered the PCSO the use of a silver A-140 to help them cover the 145 square miles and will even provide a brand-new replacement every so often so the vehicle doesn’t clock up a lot of miles.

Sergeant 412 David Roberts had the idea. He said: “The PCSOs working in the Rushcliffe South area cover a predominantly rural community so I tasked one of my PCSOs with contacting a number of car companies to ask for their assistance and only Mercedes replied. They were extremely positive from the start and within a week they had called back to say they could help. With their generous support, we will now be able to provide increased levels of patrols at the appropriate times, reducing crime and disorder and providing public reassurance.”

Local Area Commander for the area, Inspector Peter Akehurst added: “ There are six PCSOs who cover the Rushcliffe South area, based at Bingham and Cotgrave who have a large area to cover on Rushcliffe South – six towns and over 50 parishes. Ha ving a dedicated vehicle will help transport them to the areas where they need to carry out their duties. They will however, continue to use public transport and conduct foot patrols whenever possible. I am very grateful to Mercedes who have demonstrated in a very positive fashion their willingness to contribute to policing in the area. This is a fine example of a public sector company giving something back to the community and shows partnership in action.”

David Hammond, Sales Manager at Mercedes-Benz of Nottingham said: “Although parts of the borough lie close to Nottingham, Rushcliffe has a strong identity of its own and the Police will have a high visibility vehicle which demonstrates our commitment to the local community. The A-Class will be particularly manoeuvrable around the region’s centres of population split between small towns and villages."
