Redeployable hostile vehicle mitigation measures from Tata Steel were used to protect Veteranendag’ (Veterans Day) participants and thousands of visitors in The Hague on Saturday, 25 June.

Installed as part of a ‘demonstration deployment’ commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice, this small-scale project will be used to inform a national work group set up to establish the requirements for a Dutch National Barrier Asset – a stock of protective security equipment to be available for deployment at security sensitive events, such as parades, royal visits, political conferences and major sports fixtures.

Jurek Tolloczko, Business Manager – Defence & Security, Tata Steel said: “The Dutch Ministry of Security and Justice was already convinced of the protection provided by the Tata Steel barriers, gates and pedestrian portals, having reviewed the PAS 68 vehicle impact testing undertaken. This deployment has demonstrated the speed and ease of installation, allaying any concerns they previously had regarding anticipated levels of disruption.”

Each year ‘Veteranendag’ commemorates Dutch military service past and present. The day comprises of a number of events including a parade through the city centre, as well as military exhibits and a music festival at the Malieveld Park. Hostile vehicle mitigation measures were deployed in both locations by Tata Steel to control vehicle and pedestrian movements at key access points.

The Bi-Steel anti-attack vehicle barriers, gates and pedestrian portals used at this event form part of Tata Steel’s redeployable perimeter and stand-off products, for protection for people and assets against hostile vehicle attack and explosive blast.

The makers say that the system can be deployed quickly and with minimum disruption, typically on a short or medium term basis, providing a solution for security sensitive locations or events.

This installation signals an expansion into mainland Europe for Tata Steel’s Defence & Security sector group that offers a range of security from consultancy and design through to implementation. The group was established as part of the Company’s ‘Customer First’ initiative. Plans are in progress to establish a European operations centre offering regional support teams to plan and manage perimeter security installations.

Tata Steel produces a range of PAS 68 rated fixed and surface mounted bollards, barriers, walls and gates for permanent or temporary use (to meet changing security requirements). These items are manufactured at Tata Steel’s UK-based Scunthorpe steelworks. The company’s physical security systems are in use in the UK and overseas, including the Palace of Westminster, New Scotland Yard and major airports.
