Tackling Truancy and Reducing Exclusions: Restoring Respect and Improving Behaviour in Schools is the title of a conference on Tuesday, November 22 in central London.
Since 1997, the Government has invested £885m in various initiatives to tackle truancy and reduce exclusions. Yet despite this investment, in 2005 almost 500,000 pupils are absent from school each day and the numbers of exclusions are rising, event organisers report. Pupils frequently absent from school are more likely to leave with few or no qualifications and are more at risk of participating in undesirable activities, including crime and anti-social behaviour.
With the launch of the Youth Green Paper and the Government’s โLeadership Group on Behaviour and Disciplineโ due to report in November 2005, the need for schools and education institutions to tackle poor behaviour and attendance remains as strong as ever, it is claimed.
Showcasing the latest strategies to improve behaviour, tackle truancy and reduce exclusions, this one-day national conference will being together head teachers, local education authorities, Education Welfare Officers, Police-School Liaison Officers, and Behaviour and Education Support Teams to share information and best practice as to how to raise attendance and ensure effective school discipline is the norm in every classroom.
