Tory Promise

by msecadm4921

The next Conservative government will boost drug rehabilitation services and increase the number of police officers by 40,000, according to Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith.

With drug offences up by 16 per cent in a year, violent crime rising by 20 per cent, and gun crime increasing by 35 per cent, he said at a press conference in Leeds: "These figures are shocking enough. But behind them are real stories of fear, pain and tragedy. Crime is infecting our nation – and hard drugs are making our condition worse … The Conservative Party under my leadership is not going to stand by and watch as people’s lives are ruined by crime and drugs. The next Conservative government will expand dramatically the number of hard drug rehabilitation places available to young people from under 2,000 to over 20,000. That means we’ll have enough places in rehab for every young hard drug addict in Britain. It is a battle we must win because these young people are victims and they deserve a start to their adult life with a clean slate, clean from drugs."

Commenting on the "fair deal for the victims of crime and a fair deal for victims of drugs" policy, Shadow Home Secretary Oliver Letwin hinted that the cost of the rehabilitation programme could reach a maximum œ460m – which could be partly met by reducing the impact of drug treatment in the NHS. He told conservatives.com: "Overall, crime costs Britain about œ60 billion a year and a third of that is linked to cocaine, crack and heroin. We believe the fight against crime and the fight against drugs are one and the same and that they can only be won together. We have to defeat crime and that means defeating drugs.’
