Retainagroup have installed their laser etching system at Toyota?s two UK distribution depots at Portbury and Burnaston to mark vehicle glass with a code linked to the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The code and VIN are registered on the International Security Register. This laser etching system is applied to all Toyota models including the new Corolla range. A bar code reader scans the VIN and automatically sets the unique code that can then be applied to the vehicle glass. Besides the code, the telephone number of the International Security Register (ISR) is etched into the glass. This number is for police, public and Toyota to access to the ISR?s 24-hour checkline. This system takes just one minute to mark clearly six pieces of glass, the makers report. The marking conforms to the BSI standard and is impossible to remove without damaging the glass. This method of marking and registration attracts Thatcham points which help to reduce the insurance group rating and so the cost of ownership. Mark Inman on behalf of Thatcham said: ?Marking and registration on a secure database such as ISR, especially when done by this laser system, enables the true owner of the vehicle to be verified and so reduces the value of the vehicle to the thief. The result is fewer thefts of marked and registered vehicles.?
