The State of California’s online traffic school provider Traffic101.com is using facial recognition to verify individuals.
The State of California’s online traffic school provider Traffic101.com has deployed facial recognition to verify individuals that have opted for a web-based alternative to on-site traffic schools. Court systems currently allow individuals to attend traffic school as a means to ensure that insurance rates are not increased and violation points are not added to their driving records. To fulfill the course requirement online, however, many courts require that the user’s identity be verified. As a result, current online traffic school attendees must typically take the final exam in person at a test center as proof of identity. Using FaceIt technology, Traffic101.com has created a tool that makes it possible to verify the identity of the test taker from start to finish, even from remote locations. San Diego County and San Bernardino County are among the first municipalities to certify this offering. Using a PC camera (given away free to every customer), an enrollment photo of the user is taken before starting the course. When the user logs into the Traffic101.com website to take the course, the system verifies that the enrolled user’s face is the one present in front of the screen. After the student completes the Traffic101.com course, a photo of the student is printed on the certificate of completion for permanent verification and submittal to the court system. Verification during the course (at random intervals, without warning) ensures that an un-enrolled user does not take the course or otherwise manipulate the system.
