Welsh Fence

by msecadm4921

In Swansea, has been put in place at Elba playing fields in Gowerton

It’s to prevent access to a large banked area backing onto nearby housing where groups have been congregating and making a nuisance of themselves.

Residents had called for action because of the problems so police patrols were upped and a partnership approach between Swansea Council and Gowerton Community Council was put together to help find a solution.

Anti-social behaviour officers have already organised a youth shelter in the area and letters have been sent out to persistent offenders.

And now about £13k has been spent on over 100 metres of palisade fencing which means people will not be able to access the banked area beyond the playing fields.

Swansea Council’s community safety projects officer Daniel Jones said: "The Safer Swansea Partnership has offered crime prevention advice to our colleagues in the parks department due to resident complaints of anti-social behaviour in the area.

"Several suggestions were made and a decision was taken to install security fencing and gates.
"This is a tried and tested crime prevention tool.
"It is unfortunate that such measures have to be taken but the measure will prevent people from accessing the area and will therefore not cause any further disturbance to local residents.
"This kind of prevention is used throughout Swansea in different forms."

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Cllr Gerald Clement, said: "Swansea Council is committed to working in partnership with community councils and the police to tackle anti-social behaviour head-on.
"This fencing shows we’re listening to the views of residents and are committed to combating such problems."
