Providing fire protection for temporary buildings on construction sites can cause all sorts of headaches. Modular containers which are frequently used on building sites to provide non-permanent office and storage space are normally hired and a charge can be made at the end of the hire period when a hole has been drilled to accommodate cabling for such things as fire alarms. So says a northern-based installer.
UK fire safety legislation requires that ‘adequate’ means for the detection and warning of fire must be provided in all workplaces and other ‘non-domestic’ properties and this includes temporary accommodation. The temporary buildings are manufactured off-site and all the internal finishes, plumbing and electrics fitted before or on delivery, so extra time and expense would usually be required to fit fire protection.
Stockport Fire Protection has selected the Detectomat SRC 3000 wire free radio fire alarm system for some projects such as the fitting out of temporary accommodation on Greater Manchester Waste sites and Bidston Moss Viaduct in Liverpool.
Graham Weatherhead, Stockport Fire Protection’s Fire Alarm Manager says: “Another advantage of the Detectomat product is that it can be re-used on other sites without having to waste cabling. We were delighted to find the SRC 3000 and also recommend its use in any building where wiring would be a problem, such as refurbished properties and heritage buildings where cabling would be an eyesore.”
Even where cabling would not be a problem, using the SRC 3000 also saves time as there is no need to chase out walls and ceilings to run cables and to subsequently make good.
Stockport Fire Protection, who specialise in the supply and maintenance of all types of fire fighting equipment has been offering fire protection services for 18 years. They are based in Stockport but add that they offer national coverage to multiple clients.
