10 ways to burglar-proof your home:
โข Keep valuables out of sight โ it sounds obvious but itโs all too easy to leave a laptop on the kitchen table, or your wallet in the car. Keep them safely locked away and burglars will be more likely to target a property with tempting goodies on display.
โข Donโt leave large amounts of cash in your house โ if you are burgled this would be difficult to claim back and would add to the grief.
โข Donโt advertise the fact youโre home is going to be empty online. Even though itโs tempting to update Facebook with โoff in the sun, see you in two weeks!โ this will alert any potential burglar that your home could be an easy target.
โข Keep doors and windows locked when youโre out โ opportunist burglars can slip through the smallest gap, so donโt give them an invite to your home and belongings.
โข Install an effective wireless burglar alarm for complete peace of mind, and make sure its displayed at the front of the house to act as a deterrent. Haydn says wireless alarms are easier to install, and a burglar cannot disable it by cutting the wires, making your home less appealing to a burglar.
โข Get a neighbour to keep an eye on your home when you go away โ simple things like picking up mail and closing the curtains at night mean itโs less obvious your home is empty.
โข Leave a small light on in your hallway, or if you have a timer facility, use it โ itโs another way of making your home appear to be occupied, and throwing potential burglars off the scent.
โข Cancel your milk delivery โ having bottles of untouched milk outside is another clear giveaway that youโre not home.
โข If possible, leave a car on your drive, or allow a friend or neighbour to leave theirs.
โข Close curtains at night when youโre at home โ when itโs dark outside and the light are on indoors the outside world can see straight into your home, and a potential burglar could be eyeing up your belongings.
