ABI’s proposed UK GDPR Code of Conduct

by Mark Rowe

The Association of British Investigators (ABI) reports that it’s consulting with the Information Commissioner’s Office (the UK data privacy regulator, the ICO) in the development of the ABI’s proposed UK GDPR Code of Conduct.

The code featured in the November 2021 print edition of Professional Security magazine, in an interview with ABI secretary Tony Imossi.

ABI President Vince Butler said: “Processing personal data is the main core activity for every investigative, intelligence gathering, risk assessing and litigation support agency. Ensuring the lawfulness of such activities, and thus protecting the public, can only be a good thing for all. After decades of repeated government and judicial enquiries recommending a form of regulation for investigators, the accountability code membership would bring, could be a sector-led solution.”

The proposed 80-page Code is being circulated for consultation to the sector and stakeholders, who have until Friday, September 16 to provide feedback on the draft Code using a dedicated web page: www.theABI.org.uk/consultation.

At the certification body the SSAIB Lynn Watts-Plumpkin said: “SSAIB is delighted to be involved in this scheme, as the Monitoring Body, which will ensure the Code Members are fit and proper to merit the status. This will give the public and other users of the sector a degree of comfort in the accountability that code membership provides.”

Investigators and stakeholders are invited to attend a public consultation event, on Wednesday, September 7 (from 11am to about 3pm) in London, hosted by the law firm Stephenson Harwood LLP. Places are limited.
