Bumper ST22 shows in Ireland

by Mark Rowe

The Security TWENTY series of shows enjoyed a couple of bumper days in Ireland last week. On the Tuesday, ST22 Belfast ran at the Europa Hotel; and after giving exhibitors time to travel into the Republic, ST22 Dublin ran on the Thursday, the first since the 2019, meaning ST is finally back to normal after the covid pandemic.

One sad memory was the death of a friend of Professional Security Magazine, Donie O’Callaghan, since the last ST Dublin event. However he was remembered at the get-together the evening before the ST show proper, and his suggested charity Little Blue Heroes was as in 2019 the good cause that raffle proceeds went to.

As the usual Dublin venue the Red Cow Moran Hotel is among those housing refugees from Ukraine, ST22 Dublin had a new venue, the Crowne Plaza Blanchardstown. Whether thanks to the new location, or the fact that ST had not been in the city for three years, or some other reason, ST Dublin was soon buzzing, with the typical mix of visitors – corporate end users and suppliers, installers, and the Republic of Ireland’s police, the Garda.

Also with a pleasant buzz some 48 hours earlier was ST Belfast. The good cause that the Monday night informal dinner on the 12th floor of the Europa raised money for – some £1000 – was the RNLI in Northern Ireland.

The Belfast event had a morning conference, that was as ever informed and entertained by former Met Police man Mick Neville now of Super Recognisers International; and one of the exhibitors, John Davidson of the certification body the National Security Inspectorate (NSI). He featured in the July print edition of Professional Security for his talk at the Firex show at London Excel in May alongside IFSEC, setting out some of the head-shaking shortcomings in fire installations that he (and others) have come across and taken photos of. At ST, his topic was cyber – whether, and how, it’s the responsibility of the security installer in a networked system.

It only remains for the year to round off as ST regularly does with the London show, on November 3, at the Radisson Red Hotel, Heathrow. For ST regulars, that’s the same venue as pre-covid, just with a new brand name.

As ever, it’s free to attend ST, whatever your interest in private security – we only ask that you register before the day, to help us judge numbers for catering purposes. Register on this link, or email organiser Liz Lloyd – [email protected].
