Shit happens, and so does fraud. That's not us saying that, but the author of an anti-fraud book.
"Most victims have no policies and plans for reacting to fraud, and thus, in panic and disarray, make mistakes from which they never recover.’ So says Michael Comer in his latest book, Investigating Corporate Fraud. "Obviously, prevention is better than cure, and a few simple measures can reduce the likelihood that an organization will be victimized by fraud." In 1998 Gower published the third edition of Corporate Fraud by Michael Comer. Sadly, the need for such books has not gone away, Comer says. If anything the need has increased, with cases such as Enron, WorldCom and the Allied Irish Bank. Hence this new volume has been written, concentrating on the practicalities of investigating and recovering from fraud.
Happens to the good
Contrary to popular belief, corporate fraud happens to good companies and effective managers. What is crucial is the reaction when suspicions are first aroused: fraud changes from a problem to a disaster mainly because people’s initial response is ineffective. Investigating Corporate Fraud is an action plan for organisations that are victims of fraud. The aim is to help make sure that they react swiftly and effectively, recover their money and costs, with interest, and punish the offenders so that a deterrent is established for others. Comer says the book will help the organisation return to normal working as quickly as possible. It features checklists and case examples throughout. Legal coverage includes the structure of the English courts; criminal law; civil law; discovery and disclosure; information privileged against disclosure; and developments in the law.
