The author, a Croat, likens business continuity for a company to an army for a country – ‘it may cost a lot, not many people see its purpose, it takes a lot of training to maintain it, it is (hopefully) used very rarely, but when it is used it saves the country’. Interestingly at the very start Kosutic offers a couple of fictional scenarios of what can go wrong – first, a plain break-in that takes your computers can ruin your business if you are not backed up elsewhere; and second, even if you do have a back-up site if your main office is evacuated because of fire, you need to have planned what to do in that emergency. But, as he reminds readers, business continuity is not mere plans, nor a one-time job. As the book’s sub-title suggests, it’s a ‘plain English, step by step handbook for business continuity practitioners’, which goes through the ISO standard, how to get buy-in from managers, how to go about bringing in the standard, writing it, testing it, and the certification – indeed asking whether you need go for the certification.
