Newest is Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, by Thomas E Ricks. The title tells you all. Ricks uses the word ‘adventure’ in the sense that the United States went into Iraq without much idea of what to do. Ricks is a Washington Post journalist and has little to say on the British side. In a couple of pages he is uncomplimentary too about the tens of thousands of contract private security workers, including the trainers of Iraqi troops. Besides detailing the military mistakes, Ricks ends by wondering about the future – options ranging from bad to septic to catastrophic.
