This well set out excellent brief guide is very useful for those entering the fire/ security/ risk management industry and provides an interesting read to the more experienced professional.
The author Dr William Dailey was formally the training manager of the Fire Protection Association, and is now an independent consultant. Section one deals with causes of fire and fire losses. Section 2 describes ways of preventing spread of fire. Section 3 refers to ‘Fire Risk Assessment’ covering a number of important issues. ‘Means of escape’, signs and emergency lighting are covered in section 4. Section 5 deals with types of fire hazards that are commonly found in the workplace including the often overlooked use of fuses of too a high or low rating.
Arson as cause
Arson is the major cause of fire, according to section 6. That chapter covers the importance of understanding the threat. Fire drills and other training take up section 7. Types of extinguishers in Section 8 follow. Section 9 deals with post-fire activity, and the best ways to recover after the occurrences of fire. , Details of record keeping and other matters close the book, before an appendix with summary of legislation. It’s an essential guide to all newcomers to the security industry and those responsible for fire safety. This is a well clearly set out, easy to read, brief guide to fire safety. An excellent book for those undertaking their first studies/examinations in fire and security.
