Brief:
TRAVELSAFE: A Travel Security Guide For the Tourist and Business Traveller, by Peter Consterdine.
Peter Consterdine, Leeds-based operations director of an international risk management company, has written a security guide for the business traveller and the tourist. He says: ‘Statistically, we are always more likely to suffer illness or accident while abroad, than we are to be attacked, robbed or kidnapped.’ That said, there are some hair-raising stories of police corruption (Mexico) and danger (Kenya). He covers how to secure your luggage – at all times; what sort of money to carry; and how to beware the scams at airports and elsewhere. A chapter on security in the street reminds us of the need to reduce our economic attractiveness – do not carry a briefcase, unless it is essential. Chapter eight on hotels was of particular interest: in my experience, choice of hotel is often a neglected area. On my first police visit to Italy I was provided with two armed officers as my escort, yet was left at a hotel with no 24-hour security or reception, and poor locks on the doors. I immediately changed hotels. Peter rounds off by discussing expatriates – effective security precautions, awareness of environment and kidnap potential, and how to handle ransom demands. Vehicle hijack, returning to your unattended vehicle, awareness of tricksters stopping to ask you questions, taking reasonable care while driving, what to do if you get lost, insurance, health risks, even making sure you have a valid passport and a will – all are covered in an easy to read way. A must for all who contemplate travel abroad.
