Sports awards night

Security at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards, at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro on Sunday, December 14, was by the multi-national contract company G4S. The contractor provided event stewards, security officers and close protection officers.

Michael Cooper, G4S’ operations manager at the SSE, said afterwards: “The Commonwealth Games was one of our best operations in Scotland to date and a great example of what G4S’ network of highly skilled, experienced event staff and security officers can deliver. However, we’re always looking to make each event we’re present at better than the last.

“That’s why we were extremely excited when we won the opportunity to provide security for the Sports Personality of the Year Award, especially given that we’ve enjoyed a strong working relationship with the SSE Hydro since it first opened in 2013 and have helped host some great events there. We mobilised more than 300 of our top event staff, many of whom already have multiple events at the SSE under their belts, including six dedicated close protection officers who will take responsibility for the various high-profile guests who will be attending.

“2014 has been a great year for G4S in Scotland, particularly when it comes to sporting events. It was great to help with the celebrations and see the year out on a triumphant note. Congratulations from all in the G4S team to Lewis Hamilton and the rest of the sports stars who were celebrated last night in Glasgow.”

G4S were among the stewarding but not security guarding contractors at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the summer (pictured, Games mascot Clyde). The Glasgow Games organisers went for 17 security contractors in contrast to the single security guarding contractor, G4S, which led to a highly-public shortfall in guards admitted on the eve of the July 2012 event.
