Poppy appeal at stadium

by Mark Rowe

The match ball for the recent League One football match between Shrewsbury Town and Sheffield United was flown in by an RAF helicopter from RAF Shawbury, which is where Prince William trained before transferring to his role with Search and Rescue at RAF Valley Anglesey.

The Griffin helicopter made a landing inside the centre circle at the Greenhous Meadow – home of Shrewsbury Town Football Club – to make a delivery of the match ball to promote The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal in Shropshire. Collections around the ground on the day resulted in raising £700 from supporters.

The ball was collected from the helicopter by local ex-servicemen, Corporal Ricky Furgusson, who was left severely handicapped following a bomb blast in Afghanistan in January 2010 and was later awarded the Military Cross, and Rifleman Ben Taylor who was awarded the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for an heroic rescue of his colleagues also in Afghanistan.

Pro-Vision Distribution, the UK distributor of branded CCTV and access control equipment are stand sponsors of Shrewsbury Town Football Club and a box of their staff and guests witnessed the event for the Poppy Appeal.
