Prison body-worn cameras

by Mark Rowe

Edinburgh-based Edesix Ltd, a body-worn camera (BWC) product company, has been selected as the body-worn provider of choice for Her Majesty’s Prison Service in the UK.

Edesix says that after a national contract win and roll-out in England and Wales prison service, it also has secured orders for Prison applications in Scotland and, most recently, Northern Ireland. Richie McBride, Managing Director at Edesix said: “The benefits of BWCs within prisons have been widely recognised throughout previous trials; improving staff morale and encouraging a safer working and living environment for those within the prisons. Having successfully rolled out our solution to the Police Service of Northern Ireland, our recent contract with the Northern Ireland Prison Service comes as an addition to encouraging a safer working environment within the justice system.”

Justice Minister, Claire Sugden recently said of the roll-out: “I believe this is a significant and important step in ensuring that prison officers have the right tools to perform their difficult and challenging role and will contribute to a safer prison environment for both staff and prisoners.”

The cameras are designed to be worn on the prison officer’s uniform. The firm says that these cameras, with data encrypted, act as a deterrent to violent behaviour, and offer supportive evidential footage for criminal convictions and prosecutions. Visit www.edesix.com.
