Body armour survey

by Mark Rowe

Robert Kaiser the chief of PPSS Group, which supplies body armour and related equipment, is a gent. Professional Security magazine has featured him over the years, notably for his remarkable demos of his company’s kit, that he wears and then stands there when he gets attacked with a baseball bat, or has a spike stuck into the armour.

Whether you saw the demo at the International Security Expo at London Olympia in 2019 or on his firm’s website (pictured), it’s a visual and visceral reminder of what front-line security and related staff (such as the police, and prison officers) may have to face. As Robert wrote most recently, the threat from ‘blunt force’ injury is under-reported. While any case of police or other wearers shot at is sure to make headlines, the more common risks faced by security and related wearers of such PPE (personal protective equipment) – whether patrolling hospitals, or buses and trains – are from kicks and punches and knocks to the floor; even bites.

Robert is looking to carry out an anonymous online survey, to better gauge the sector, and thus better able to provide products to protect it: asking such questions as whether you been issued with a body armour or have you purchased body armour yourself; and have you ever been assaulted while on duty. Robert’s plan is to write a paper based on the results; for example to see if there are any international differences in user risks.
