Roy's Monthly Gossip

ST16 Ireland thanks: May 2016

by Mark Rowe

Before I start to tell you about the latest gossip that you so want to read, I want to say thank you to all who came to our latest Security TWENTY event.

ST16 Ireland in Dublin went so well the other Wednesday that we will return in April 2017, same place, same date even, and at the Red Cow Moran Hotel. So pencil it in your diaries, as I know some readers from the UK and further afield went to it, besides our Irish friends. You can view the images we took on this link https://professionalsecurity.co.uk/gallery/security-twenty-16-ireland/, and Mark Rowe has done a round up of it on page 14.

I have one of those apps on my phone that records how many steps you do in a day and it seems I did 12,037 on the Tuesday and 10,465 on the Wednesday, that’s almost two miles! So perhaps its good training for Ifsec which as you know is coming up fast. Have you registered? They have a great line up of speakers as you can see from their latest blog on page 23. And they tell me that for this years IFSEC’s Engineers of Tomorrow competition, running at the show in June is for the first time in the competition’s history, that all places are filled two months before the show. I will be there as will the team, so hope to see you there. I have a problem, as this year my 20th wedding anniversary is on the Wednesday, June 22, yep in the middle of the show. So that is not popular with Mrs C; do you think the guys would move the show dates if I asked them too? Nah me neither.

The next ST event is in Manchester, the conference-exhibition is at the Hilton on Deansgate where we have been before, it’s on Tuesday, July 5 with the charity dinner the night before. The exhibition spaces are fully booked as we have some 70 exhibitors lined up for you, but in any case entry is free for all delegates (free breakfast and buffet lunch, too!). Just register on the magazine website https://professionalsecurity.co.uk/security-twenty16-register/ or email Liz Lloyd at [email protected].

So it would appear that as always there has been a few moves that you might like to know about. Firstly I think it’s common knowledge now that Paul Wong has left Bosch; he has been MD for them for just over eight years. I have been told two rumours, firstly that he is going out of the industry, and/or secondly that he is going to work for a lock manufacturer, well who knows, time will tell. Meanwhile the company are advertising for a replacement so if you fancy a big job, then get your CV in. You may not know this but I am sure I have mentioned it before that years ago during a business meeting with Paul, I nearly killed him! Yep, seems he has a very severe nut allergy, and after consuming a chicken tikka sandwich he had to rush off to Cardiff hospital to get seen too. So what ever you do don’t give Paul your nuts!?!

Now it appears that some people are moving around within the distributor world? For example I told you recently that Julie Joiner had joined HIKVision after having been in the industry since 1999 when she started with Norbain and was at ADI and 360 Vision. She has left them and has joined DVS, the HIKVision distributor, who seem to just keep expanding their team, so she will still be selling HIKVision kit. Chris Shaw is joining CCTV Direct from Norbain, with Gareth Rhodes who has left COP to also join CCTV Direct who also seem to be growing. Talking of DVS seems I will be doing a draw for them at the beginning of May for some lucky person to win a Citroen Nemo, so keep your eyes open for the winner to be announced, good luck. Talking of Hikvision, they have just opened a new European Head Office and Logistics Centre in Hoofddorp, that’s the Netherlands. The new head office occupies a total space of over 2000 square meters, giving Hikvision the capacity to accommodate more employees, and providing more warehouse space for storage.

Eaton (formerly Coopers) has appointed David Hicks as technical director of security products. Leading engineers at the power management company’s security innovation centre in Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, Hicks’ job is to design and develop security products. He is also responsible for updates of the firm’s commercial and residential security products. So what does that mean, well if you have always wanted that extra feature or have that innovative idea, give David a call.

Gary Aimson joins ISD Tech in the position of International Key Account Director based out of the company’s headquarters in Camberley, Surrey. Reporting to Managing Director, Nicky Stokes, Gary will be responsible for business development to support ISD Tech’s growth plans both in the UK and across core Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) markets and beyond. His other main duty will be to manage key international accounts.

Charity

Thinking Space the control room furniture company are fund-raising again. Ten of them were taking part in the Romsey Relay Marathon on Sunday, April 17. This year they’re raising funds for Romsey Young Carers. RYC is a local charity, local to them, that is, supporting carers under 18 years who are affected by the caring responsibility within their lives. This could be caring for a family member with a long term illness, disability or experiencing drug or alcohol misuse.
