Anti-graffiti op in Bristol

by Mark Rowe

Police in Bristol say that they are cracking down on taggers and nuisance graffiti culprits in blighted parts of the city. Avon and Somerset Police will be working with Bristol City Council to clean up the areas affected and seek those responsible for the damage.

PC 1821 Stuart King, of Trinity Road station, said: “Illegal and unwanted graffiti is criminal damage. Although sometimes glamorised in the media, the thousands of graffiti tags which are on public buildings and private property do not promote the city in a positive light and can make people fear crime is more prevalent than it actually is.

“The average cost to clear a graffiti tag from a property wall can be in excess of £150 which many people may struggle to afford to pay. It can also deter people from visiting areas and thus allow street crime to increase. Those responsible for the prolific tagging generally are committed to spraying or writing their tag in as many locations as possible.

“They are often also part of a larger group who will go by the name of a graffiti crew and will actively plan to target specific locations which often include rail carriages and prominent locations.”
