Alcohol bingeing and crime – practical responses is the title of a conference by consultancy Perpetuity Group on February 10, 2005 at the Gilbert Murray Conference Suite, University of Leicester.
Alcohol misuse, particularly bingeing, has been devastating local communities, public services and businesses for decades and until recently received little attention from the national policy makers. The organisers quote the Government’s Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England that estimates that 5.9 million people binge drink and that the effects of alcohol and crime cost society £7.3 billion. A greater national emphasis is being placed on reducing alcohol related harm; hence the Perpetuity Group is pleased to be holding a conference on practical responses to this serious issue. The conference will cover enforcement campaigns; football violence and disorder; policing the night-time economy; working with nightclubs and other licensed premises; successful partnerships; arrest referral schemes; sobering up units as alternatives to police cells; impact of the new licensing legislation; role of the alcohol industry; use of designation orders
Speakers include: David Swift (Staffordshire Deputy Chief Constable, and Head, English Police Team for Euro 2004); Peter Goodall (Police Standards Unit, Home Office); Kerry Cox (Chief Inspector, Brighton Licensing Unit, Sussex Police); Steve Greenacre (Inspector, Manchester City Safe Initiative, Greater Manchester Police and the Home Office Violent Crime Team); Jane Mowat, (Director, Safer York Partnership); Trevor Gladding (Community Safety Manager, Cheltenham Borough Council); Nick Tegradine, (Chief Executive, Nottingham Alcohol Problems Advisory Service); Mike McCall and Danny Levine (Consultants, Inner London Detoxification Centre Project); Matthew Pink (Clerk to the Gloucestershire Justices); Wendy Rushton (Worcester City Council); Chris Holmes (Chairman, Tynemill Ltd Pub Chain and Castlerock Brewery); Martin Gill (Director, PRCI Ltd, and Professor of Criminology, University of Leicester); and Julie Bentley (Chief Executive, Suzy Lamplugh Trust).
