Deck For Youth

by msecadm4921

In our November print issue we printed a photo of a Glasgow bus anti-vandalism initiative. Here are more details.

"The Deck" is fitted with the latest gadgets to make the learning experience as fun and interesting as possible for young people. School children from St Brendan’s Primary school have been involved from the early planning stages to ensure the bright colour scheme and facilities on board appeal to the target audience (7-14 year olds). The lower deck is fitted with tables and chairs for young people to play games, listen to music and chat with friends. Playstation 2 consoles are also fitted for young people to enjoy playing the latest games on board. The upper saloon is designed in the style of a cinema, with a wide screen TV fitted to the back wall to allow educational DVDs and the latest box office hits to be viewed.

Commenting at the launch, Eric Stewart, Managing Director, First in Glasgow said: "This is an innovative new learning resource which I hope will be well used by our partners Strathclyde Police and Glasgow City Council, as well as other community groups. Vandalism destroys communities and endangers the life of our passengers and staff and "The Deck" is just one of the things First is doing to make young people think about the consequences of their actions".

"The Deck" will be used at a range of youth events such as open days, concerts, community events and festivals as part of the partners’ ongoing campaign to educate young people about the dangers of transport related vandalism. It will also be used by community safety officers and youth services to target problem areas during school hours as well as at night.

Chief Superintendent Barry Dougall, Head of Community Safety, Strathclyde Police added: "Strathclyde Police warmly welcomes this initiative. The need to talk and listen to young persons remains vital. I believe "The Deck" offers Strathclyde Police and our partner agencies a unique platform to reach young persons in a friendly safe environment within their own communities. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank ‘First’ for the
introduction of "The Deck" in the Strathclyde Policing area".
