Trials of the Luton Safe EyeDentifier, a new badge-sized camcorder worn by door supervisors outside pubs and clubs in Luton, have been a success, it is claimed, in calming trouble before it escalates.
A camera built into the front of a door supervisor’s florescent jacket records words and moves of anyone nearby. The recording quality is so good it can be used as evidence in court, in tandem with the town’s CCTV, it is claimed.
Former policeman Andy Stephenson, co-ordinator of Luton Safe and the brains behind the EyeDentifier, said: “Luton Safe EyeDentifier is designed as a deterrent. Door supervisors are often abused and attacked by people who don’t realise they have crossed the line between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. But most trouble-makers think again when they discover they are being filmed at close quarters and the footage can land them in court.”
Ten door supervisors are to use EyeDentifier full-time following the trials. Luton Safe is a group of licensees from town centre pubs and clubs, with the council, the police and businesses working together to stamp out anti-social behaviour by pooling ideas and resources. At the last meeting, it was decided to extend the Luton Safe network across the town. Any licensee who wants to take part should call Andy Stephenson on 07834 85 67 08.
