MFD was a double finalist at the Institution of Highways and Transportation Awards held on June 18, at the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon.
In the CPNI sponsored awards, MFD was overall winner in the category of ‘Security in the Public Realm’, for its work on a Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) Scheme at BAA’s Heathrow, Terminal 5. The judges commented: "This was an uniquely challenging project where both civil and security engineering skills were needed to design and construct an effective scheme in a pedestrian permeable and aesthetically attractive area." They then went on to say that they were impressed by the very rapid pace of applied consultancy to innovate with foundation designs and adapt newly developed and tested bollard systems to fit within the ground conditions and depths available at the site.
A second HVM scheme of MFD’s, for the Scottish Parliament, for the design of a vehicle entry control system, was commended. The judges commented, "A well thought out and executed security solution using clever detailing and high quality finishes. The scheme included some ambitious traffic management arrangements and the installation of impact tested bollards and one of the first uses of a particular rising arm barrier design at a UK civilian location."
