Hazardous Directive

by msecadm4921

British Security Industry Association members are ready for RoHS, is the message from the trade association on the eve of the implementation of that Directive.

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive, which comes into force on July 1, aims to restrict the use of six hazardous substances used in the manufacture of certain electrical and electronic equipment.

What they say

Alex Carmichael, BSIA Technical and Membership Services Director, says: "The BSIA considers security equipment to be mainly outside the scope of the RoHS Directive due to the fact that most security equipment is classed as category 9 equipment. However, we are aware that by 2010 security equipment may be brought under the RoHS Directive. As a result, BSIA manufacturers are looking to be RoHS compliant sooner rather than later and many will meet the requirements of the Directive by tomorrow’s implementation date."

The BSIA reports that the hazardous substances covered by the RoHS Directive are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ether. These substances are used in many manufacturing processes including soldering, anti-corrosion coatings and flame retardants. For more information on the Directive visit www.rohs.gov.uk
