IP Based

by msecadm4921

Jesus College, Cambridge sought a networked, Internet Protocol-based CCTV system.

The college wanted campus-wide coverage without the need for additional cabling that could damage historic buildings. The project, based on Indigovision’s TCP/IP CCTV system, was supplied and installed by Intruder International, the installers working with the college’s IT department. The system comprises more than 30 cameras connected into the existing college LAN, using their network infrastructure. The cameras, a mixture of static IndigoVision IP cameras and VCL high-speed dome cameras, can be viewed and controlled from PCs at multiple locations across the College network, making for flexibility.

The Indigovision Video Bridge Control Centre (VBCC) software enables college staff to view live and recorded video from a PCs. Video evidence can be exported should the need arise. Cameras have been segregated onto their own secure virtual local area network (VLAN), so that only those with the appropriate permissions can see the live and recorded video. More cost savings came from using IndigoVision’s Networked Video Recorder software (NVR). Unlike traditional ‘black box’ digital video recorders, that are dependent on proprietary hardware, all cameras are recorded 24-hours onto a standard Windows 2000 PC supplied by the college, running the NVR software, the installers report. Unlike most IP-based systems, the installers add, the IndigoVision solution can encode and stream network video at quality and at high frame rates while using minimal amounts of bandwidth and recording disk space. This allows the college to keep control over the amount of network bandwidth it allocates to each camera video stream.
