Leeds Crime Fall

In Leeds, overall crime in Halton Moor has fallen by 40 per cent since the introduction of CCTV in March 2004.

From March 2004 to August 2005, there were 1092 recorded offences, compared with 1555 over the preceding 18 month period. The biggest drop has been in crimes of burglary, which saw of reduction from 359 to 136 offences. Thefts from cars are down from 122 to 56; car theft is down from 95 to 50; criminal damage is down from 311 recorded cases to 253. There has been a slight increase in the numbers of assaults from 151 to 169. In the same period, there have been 98 arrests linked to the cameras.

The 10 CCTV cameras positioned around the Halton Moor area have been funded by Leeds South East Homes and are monitored centrally at the LeedsWatch control room..

Demand

There were 120 empty properties on the
estate when the cameras were installed. There are now only 38 as a result of increased demand.
