So The Sun Always Shines

SunGard, as a disaster recovery (DR) company, sought a high specification security system for its latest site – a recently refurbished data centre on the south coast of England. The firm offers a back-up service to corporate clients, in the event of an incident rendering their existing systems unusable, covering services such as data systems, space and work areas, computer rooms plus web hosting facilities. SunGard has a long-standing working relationship with Sony SAIF installer, Total Security Protection, working with them on security arrangements at all their UK locations. On Total’s recommendation, the DR firm specified its new security system based around Sony’s CCTV range. The integrated CCTV and access control system installed by Total included 12 Sony EX-Wave static colour cameras and 15 high-speed dome cameras, fitted with Sony modules. These internal and external cameras were then linked to 12 Sony 20-inch colour monitors and two Sony HSR-2P digital recorders, all located in a central control room.

Karl Smith, Building Services Project Manager at SunGard, said: ‘We chose Sony for this site as the system designed by Total Security Protection provided us with exactly what we required, a discreet but effective surveillance operation covering the whole site, not just on the inside but complete exterior protection too." The DR company’s south coast data centre, with three main entrances, covers a large area and is surrounded by woodland. Perimeter protection includes Redwall passive infra-red detectors from Security Enclosures. Karl Smith said: ‘As soon as someone enters the site, our control room staff are instantly aware as the perimeter protection triggers the CCTV cameras to preset positions. So far, we are extremely pleased with the system as it gives us such a high degree of surveillance cover 24 hours a day.’ Inside, the CCTV installation integrates with a Janus access control system, from Grosvenor Technology. The whole package was installed as an upgrade to SunGard’s existing system. The DR building was operational throughout the entire time that the project was running. The installer had to keep the old system in working condition while the new system was being installed. <br>
US-based SunGard is a global organisation with more than 100 locations throughout the world. In the UK, the company operates through 13 sites across Britain, ensuring business continuity and IT availability for customers – mainly in the banking, retail and corporate sectors. Karl Smith added: ‘No company today can afford to be separated from its data and systems during problems such as natural disasters, technology failures or power cuts. With companies entrusting SunGard with these support services, we are duty bound to provide a secure site for our customers and we believe that the Sony-based CCTV system is the optimum solution for us.’
