Swiss Rail Contract

Network cameras and video servers from Axis Communications will be installed to improve public transport security in a project being undertaken by Switzerland’s largest transport operator – Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB) 2.

SBB has decided to install the recently launched AXIS 209MFD Network Camera in double-decker commuter trains serving Zürich to improve safety and security for passengers and staff.

The total installation order is estimated at about 5,000 network cameras, with the potential for additional installations. The installation phase will begin during autumn 2007 and is expected to be fully delivered by the end of 2009.

The network camera AXIS 209MFD is only four centimetres high and is easy to install on ceilings or walls, according to the makers, and it offers the advantage of megapixel resolution. This makes it possible to view image details needed for identifying individuals and objects of interest. Equipped with Power over Ethernet (PoE) capability, the network camera uses one Ethernet cable for both power and video, making installation quick and cost efficient, it is claimed. The AXIS 209MFD also provides the possibility of integrating other components in a security system.

The system integrator RUF Telematik AG secured the order for the total security installation. RUF is an Axis authorised partner.

Ray Mauritsson, president, Axis Communications said: "Installations of network video solutions within the transportation segment have increased during the past few years and network video products from Axis have been installed in several demanding transportation environments. The new AXIS 209MFD Network Camera addresses the market’s demand for video surveillance in locations where an ultra-compact, high performance solution is required."

Sven Schraven, project manager RUF Telematik AG said: "We searched for a reliable partner that could offer the best image quality and state-of-the-art technology. Simple installation, fully automatic and simplified management of the cameras and the total solution was of upmost importance to us. It was especially important for all involved that these cameras were IP-cameras, since we recognise that traditional analogue cameras will be phased out in Switzerland as well as in the rest of Europe. This is not the future, it is the reality."

Incorporate technology

Steve Gorski, managing director for Axis Communications (UK) said: “The AXIS 209MFD makes it easy for transport operators to incorporate the latest network video camera technology as it is designed specifically for this market.  We have seen a great deal of interest in this product which ticks all the right boxes for transportation customers – it is discreet, robust and easy-to-install, and offers great picture quality.”
