The New West End Company has launched a Crime Intelligence Partnership (CIP) for Bond Street, Oxford Street and Regent Street.
Reducing business crime is a key priority, reports the New West End Company, a body that works on behalf of the central London shopping streets. The partnership between businesses, Westminster CCTV Trust and the Metropolitan Police covers the New West End Company district. Businesses, police and the company’s Red Cap wardens use CCTV and radio links, and gather and share intelligence.
The May 4 launch saw the New West End Company presented with the Safer Business Award, by Michael Schuck, Chief Executive of Action Against Business Crime. Speaking at the launch, Gary Reeves, Chief Executive of New West End Company said: “The Crime Intelligence Partnership is a key priority for New West End Company. With businesses and agencies working together and effective promotion of the scheme we can achieve one of our core aims of reducing retail crime in a safer environment.” Peter Doherty, General Manager of House of Fraser Oxford Street added: “The success of this initiative relies on retailers sharing information and becoming members of the Partnership. Business crime affects all retailers in the West End and by working with New West End Company and the Partnership we can all benefit.”
Supt Russ Hanson-Coles of the Metropolitan Police said: “Crime continues to fall in the West End, however we are not complacent. This initiative will raise the game even further. By working in partnership and focussing on those committing crime and anti-social behaviour we send a clear message to criminals. Do not come into the West End to commit crime, we will deal with you.”
The partnership employs a full-time crime intelligence manager. The company was formally established as a Business Improvement District (BID) in April 2005 for an initial three years.
