by Mark Rowe

At its dinner during its annual conference, the chiefs of university security group, AUCSO, presented two new AUCSO Fellowships during its awards evening.

For contributions to the association, the Executive Committee recognised two members: David Owen, AUCSO Secretary, for his continued support for the association for more than 20 years, first as head of security at Southampton University, as a member, and also as association secretary for the last ten years. And Ray Wheatley, AUCSO’s Ireland representative, for his support, membership and service to AUCSO over 20 years, with the last ten years as an executive member representing Ireland, Europe and for progressing the UK-based body’s links with the equivalent US-based campus security body, IACLEA.

Pictured left to right at the National Space Centre, Leicester, are Roger Morgan (outgoing AUCSO chair, University of Sussex), Ray Wheatley, and Mark Sutton (new AUCSO chair, Aston University).

Among the speakers at the three-day conference at the University of Loughborough were, on the latest US-UK campus security manager exchange, Peter Brinkley of the University of Surrey, who exchanged with Ohio State; and David Perry, the president of the US-based equivalent of AUCSO, IACLEA (International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators), which holds its 2015 conference in Nashville from June 29 to July 2. Mark Sutton is among the invited speakers in Nashville.

The 2014 exchange between Malcolm Dawson, the acting head of security at the University of Leeds, and Georgia Tech, featured in the November 2014 print issue of Professional Security. More exchanges are planned; two between the UK and United States, sponsored by product firms CriticalArc and Axis Communications; and another is hoped for between Singapore and the UK. AUCSO is looking for expressions of interest from members.

Sheridan Coulthard (Newcastle) gave the association an update on training for the sector; Tony Porter, CCTV Surveillance Camera Commissioner, gave an update; and Trevor Jones and Dr Melissa Marselle of the University of Salford described the ProtectED project, which is due to launch fully at the AUCSO 2016 conference, at Salford.
