Duty fraud guide

by Mark Rowe

A guide has been developed by the retail trade body the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), with HM Revenue and Customs, to highlight the risks and key markers of duty fraud, and to give retailers the information needed to stay clear of duty fraud, and report problems should they arise.

The guide details how to protect a business from non-duty paid products and how to spot duty fraud in the supply chain. HM Revenue and Customs estimates that retailers are losing up to 14 per cent of the UK beer market to the illicit trade, and in 2012 alone alcohol duty fraud was estimated to cost the taxpayer over £1.2bn.

The ACS adds that the level of duty paid on alcohol products in the UK is already among the highest in the world, leading to an increasing number of retailers and wholesalers being exposed to illegal products.
