Cobus de Swardt, managing director of the anti-corruption pressure group Transparency International, has sent the following letter to the head of all 209 Football Associations (FA) that are members of FIFA, world football’s governing body. He is asking them to support FIFA presidential candidates “with outstanding personal records of integrity and who align themselves with key recommendations for governance reform in FIFA.”
TI says that FIFA reform must be led by an independent reform commission to review all new governance arrangements and that the new president should support this. For the letter in full visit http://www.transparency.org.
Meanwhile at its extraordinary session in Zurich on October 20, the FIFA Executive Committee agreed to a change to the rules governing investigations and decisions made by the Ethics Committee. Acting FIFA President Issa Hayatou said: “I was pleased to see unity among the Executive Committee members during our discussions of reform and its critical importance to our organisation and world football. Increasing the transparency of ethics investigations is just one example of our firm commitment to change. It was also significant that we set the course for the upcoming presidential election.”
