Vertical Markets

Glass buy

by Mark Rowe

County Durham-based Clayton Glass has announced the purchase of specialist glass manufacturer Romag for an undisclosed sum. The deal brings together two north east glass and glazing companies under the same ownership, although both will continue to operate as separate entities with their respective management teams in distinct parts of the glass industry.

Ryan Green, Managing Director of Clayton Glass, said: “We are delighted to have completed the purchase of Romag and look forward to helping both businesses grow and flourish in the years ahead. Although there are many synergies between the two companies in terms of location, history and core glass manufacturing activities, they specialise in very different areas of the glass industry.

“As a result, with both businesses having market leading reputations in their respective sectors, we will continue to operate each company completely independently so that both can focus entirely on continuing to grow their specialist market share. However, the new arrangement also means that where there are opportunities to work more closely on specific future projects, then naturally we will do so.”

Clayton Glass Group makes insulated glass units for the domestic sector and specialist glass for conservatories. The company is based in North Stanley with a further factory site in South Shields and an investment in Northern Express Glass based in Fleetwood, giving it a combined turnover of £27m and employing 250 people.

Leadgate-based Romag produces specialist glass products and security glazing laminates, serving the building integrated PV, security, architectural and transport sectors. The company has annual sales of around £15m and employs 150 people.

Although both companies have enjoyed a long term presence in their respective markets, the acquisition will bring additional opportunities for future collaboration on specialist glass products and technologies, the buyers say.

Ryan Green said: “Both companies have a common interest in new glass technology development and innovation. This complementary focus not only ensures that both companies are a great fit for each other, but also that there is plenty of potential for an exchange of ideas and development, which can only be good news for everyone concerned.”

Earlier this year, Clayton Glass was recognised by the London Stock Exchange as one of the top ‘1000 companies that inspire Britain’, an annual celebration of the fastest growing and most dynamic SMEs.
