Home security survey

by Mark Rowe

During the Covid-19 virus lockdown, home security will be at the back of most people’s minds as we are having to spend most of the day at home, but this shouldn’t be the case, says a home wireless security product company.

Protect your perimeter by making sure your fences are in good condition and by trimming high hedges. Contrary to popular belief, high hedges and fences won’t hide the contents of your home; or even if they do, also they provide hiding spots for potential criminals!

Install security measures so you have a loud alarm siren to alert neighbours in the event of a break in and so you can remotely monitor what’s happening at home from your phone. Light the way with a motion-activated security light; one of the simplest and quickest ways to put off potential burglars. These are among home security tips.

Less than one in five people (19pc) are concerned that their current home will be broken into, according to new data from SimpliSafe.

The survey also found that half of correspondents (50pc) aren’t worried about being burgled at all, whilst almost a third (31pc) said it had never crossed their minds.

Jonathan Wall, UK General Manager of SimpliSafe, says: “While the overall decrease in the number of burglary offences recorded is positive to see, what is really concerning is that the number of people who appear to think about their home’s safety very rarely. Although we certainly don’t want to scare people, unfortunately no one is immune to home burglaries or theft.

“When you look at the numbers combined, 81 per cent of people don’t pay their home security the attention that they should. Those are unprecedented numbers. We hope to help spark a wake up call among the people of the UK and ask them to make small but effective changes to protect their home, possessions and loved ones.”

About the survey

Some 1,500 people were questioned via Google Surveys in March 2020. The survey question was:
Are you worried your home will be broken into?
– Yes, I’m worried most of the time
– Maybe, I’ve never really thought about it
– No, I’m not worried about it at all.
