Corner adaptor

by Mark Rowe

A corner adaptor unit has been designed to allow the Canon VB-S800 compact dome to be installed in such places as interview rooms and custody suites, mental health facilities and immigration centres; and where a camera could be vandalised.

While there are no specific European standards relating to the installation of CCTV into areas where vulnerable persons are housed there are strict principles, the CCTV product firm says. A camera has to deliver as close to full room coverage as possible. The triangular design of the adaptor with the wide angle lens will allow this, the product firm says. A mini-dome mounted in a corner is unsuitable normally, as it has a blind spot directly below.

Vandal resistance is a must as the unit is likely to be subject to physical attack. Installation with as few tools as possible is appealing if an engineer with a toolbox is a risk and counting each tool in and out can be time consuming. The cover of the mini dome has to be removed as part of the installation. This prevents a second lens effect being created when installed behind the CMD dome. The camera is designed to be concentric to the CMD dome to ensure that there is no change on the focal point of the camera if using a PTZ type.

The product features IK10 cast acrylic dome with scratch-proof coating and an anti-ligature design and is available in brushed stainless steel

As for installation, the mounting frame is initially fitted into the room corner. For a safe fit a seal of anti-pick mastic can be applied around the edge. This creates an IP rated seal and reduces the chance of a ligature point being created. As not all rooms are precisely 90 degrees in the corner the mounting frame is designed to flex to fit irregular room shapes. The dome is fitted into the central triangle by first removing and discarding the outer cover. The dome is held in held in place by removing three nuts and fitting it into a clamping bracket. The clamping bracket and the dome is then secured back onto the front panel. The unit, pictured, can now be connected and fitted into the frame.

Users can integrate audio; this requires local power and has a flying lead ready to connect directly to the mini dome. Visit http://www.canon.co.uk/.
