Data protection obligations met

by Mark Rowe

With GDPR Safe, commercial and domestic CCTV operators can meet their data protection obligations, says the firm which offers online compliance.

The Data Protection Act 2018 was a re-stating of the legal obligations for those who collect and process personal data – including those who capture video surveillance footage using CCTV and video doorbell systems. Compliance with Data Protection law has always been a headache for CCTV operators, partly due to the complexity of the subject. Not anymore according to GDPR Safe, who offer CCTV Data Protection Policies that are easily customised to each client’s specific needs.

Using a simple and affordable online system, installers can provide their customers with the peace of mind they need to know that they’re operating their system legally.

How it works for installers

Installers first set up a free GDPR Safe account – a process that can be completed in as little as 60 seconds. Each GDPR Safe Policy Pack features a unique QR code, which the installer scans using their Smartphone before leaving the pack with their customer. This process links the Policy Pack with their installer account.

Every year that their customer renews their policy, the installer receives up to 50 per cent commission as credit to spend with their distributor. GDPR Safe even handle the renewals process behind the scenes.

How it works for customers

Customers are prompted to answer a series of questions about their installation, via a secure website. This takes as little as 15 minutes. The answers to those questions are then used to produce a customised data protection policy and associated guidance that is specific to that customer’s needs. The customer can amend the answers to those questions at any point during the 12 months that follow, and download or print their updated policy documents on demand.

An agent for Subject Access Requests (SARs)

One of the most burdensome aspects of compliance is knowing how to respond to Subject Access Requests (SARs). The DPA 2018 gives individuals several legal rights, including the right to access copies of footage held by CCTV operators. For the duration of the customer’s policy term, GDPR Safe act as an agent for the customer – a first point of contact for members of the public looking to exercise their legal rights – simplifying an often-confusing & worrying process for customers. GDPR Safe will then work closely with the customer to respond appropriately to the individual, as required by law.

Policy holders can also request assistance from GDPR Safe via Phone or Email at any point during their policy term.

An easy up-sell for installers

With minimal effort on-site, installers can increase their margins during installation, or as part of regular maintenance activities. Once sold, each policy has the potential to build a recurring revenue stream with no additional effort on the part of the installer. Without needing to become experts in Data Protection law, installers can provide their customers with an affordable and valuable product that provides peace of mind.

Increased revenue for distributors

Commissions earned by installers on policy renewals are paid quarterly, directly to the distributor that original sold them the Policy Pack. Distributors then credit those commissions against the appropriate Installer’s account for future purchases (or to clear an existing balance).
