Big data integration

by Mark Rowe

BT’s Assure Cyber service has embedded Pentaho’s big data integration and analytics platform as part of a global OEM agreement between BT and Pentaho, a Hitachi Group company. Assure Cyber has been designed to address the detection and active mitigation of what the firms call complex and sustained security threats faced by commercial organisations and governments.

According to the Global State of Information Security, 38 percent more security incidents were reported in 2015 over 2014. GCHQ and other sources claim these breaches are costing the global economy hundreds of billions of dollars annually. Analysing relational data alone provides only limited context and visibility in relation to potential security threats, which can be triggered by events ranging from equipment failure to disgruntled employee behaviour to theft. The most valuable insights come from blending structured and unstructured data from disparate sources, providing a holistic view to make better decisions, the firms says.

BT says that its Assure Cyber service brings together event data and telemetry from a rich variety of data sources including business systems, traditional security controls and detection tools. Pentaho is for Assure Cyber customers to harvest insights from the data, relational and unstructured. This means vulnerabilities and incidents that would previously have taken days, even weeks, to investigate and respond to, can now be identified and acted on immediately, the firms say.

Paul Scholey, VP EMEA & APAC, Pentaho, said: “BT’s Assure Cyber service is exactly the type of complex and critical enterprise data management for which Pentaho is engineered. Crucially, since cybercrime continually evolves, it’s essential that Assure Cyber is built on an open standards, future-proof platform like Pentaho that can integrate whatever new data types and tools BT may need to introduce into its reference architecture over time.”
