Partners against metal theft in voids

by Mark Rowe

Void and vulnerable properties in the north-east of England are being guarded against metal theft by a partnership between Selectamark and the security product company’s forensic marking deployment partner DNA Protec.

In a recent initiative with Your Homes Newcastle (YHN), DNA Protec marked metal infrastructure in 14 high rise tower blocks across the city of Newcastle with SelectaDNA Trace.

Items that were DNA-coded included copper/aluminium lightening conductors, cabling and brass valves in all plant and switch rooms, and all brass wet and dry riser valves. All items coded were then added to the SelectaDNA database.

Some 300 deterrent signs have been put up externally and within the 14 tower blocks to warn thieves that the metal is marked.

Geoff Seddon, Director of DNA Protec, said: “Your Homes Newcastle has suffered previously from metal theft in all of these blocks and our work falls into their metal theft reduction strategy across the city. The success of this initial contract in deterring subsequent thefts of metal from the YHN property portfolio could result in it being rolled out to other problematic sites across the city in the near future.”
