Osprey wind and solar generator

by Mark Rowe

How to provide the power for security kit where you cannot rely on electricity? One-Eco are the UK makers of the Osprey wind and solar generator. Two options are on offer, semi-permanent or permanent. The Osprey is designed to give an output of 1 amp / 24vdc for five days without charge. Even it is claimed on the harshest of sites it will recharge to peek power output at winds of just 7mph, or using just the solar panel alone will charge the unit for four months of the year. It is rated at IP66 and comes with a standard five year warranty. A lockable base box holds all components and batteries. The solar panel is designed into the lid of the container. Larger systems can have ground mount options. From April to August, the makers claim, the product runs on solar alone, From September to March it works on a combination of wind and solar. The power requirement of 12 months at 1 amp is 207.6 kwhrs, while solar is capable of 150 kilowatt hours a year. Depending on wind and season, the wind turbine is also capable of 150 kilowatt hours. The product does not have a gearbox and has very few moving parts giving according to the manufacturers an extended life expectancy. As for operation and installation, you connect 24VDC or 12VDC terminals provided within the base box. The product is said to be suitable for remote places where security systems are required, and where the cost of installing cables would be too costly. Typically a CCTV system would have wireless radio links with static or PTZ cameras. The product can be used with a 230v inverter allowing for LED lighting and small power requirements such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP). It’s claimed you can set up in the middle of a field in an hour. A mounting flange with guy ropes is supplied. You supply the pole, typically a pole length of 3 to 5 metres is required depending on site. All charging is automatic and pre-set before installation.
