Building security and justice

A Panel of Experts for the Security, Conflict and International Development (SCID) MSc Course , provided by the Department of Criminology at the University of Leicester, has been recently established. Their aim; to further enhance the learning experience of students and expose them to the knowledge and views of a range of international experts. A select number of Panel members have been invited to the first – of what is hoped will be an annual – SCID Symposium on March 13, to present papers on the subject of building security and justice in post-conflict environments.

Papers address issues concerning stabilisation in immediate post-conflict environments, the relationship between the police and military in conflict and post-conflict environments, Security Sector Reform, transitional justice, juvenile justice, and community-based dispute resolution in conflict-affected environments. Presenters include former diplomats, retired senior police chiefs and military officers, government advisers, international human rights and humanitarian law barristers, and senior officials in the UN system.

Papers from the Symposium will be published as an annual SCID Critical Reader, provided to SCID students. Audio and video recordings of the presentations will also be uploaded to the Course platforms (iPad and Blackboard).
